Exclusion and inequity has a new face in the world of AI
It's not bias in the algorithms.
It's gatekeeping disguised as protection.
While boardrooms debate "Responsible AI," a new digital divide is hardening. On one side are the insiders—those with the pedigree, the deep pockets, and the proximity to power. They are learning the "tricks" in private Slacks and whisper circles.
On the other side is everyone else.
A familiar pattern is repeating itself—the same one that has played out with every technological wave. And it's leaving the same people behind.
Inside corporate walls:
The informal networks that have always existed—the golf courses, the happy hours, the "let me show you a trick"—are now teaching AI fluency. To the same people. Again.
The "special" pilot teams. The handpicked cohorts. The innovation labs with velvet ropes. Access granted not by curiosity or capability, but by proximity.
Non-technical professionals are being quietly sidelined by language designed to exclude rather than invite. "AI councils" are forming that look a lot like the old boy's clubs with new names. Even where tools are available to everyone, not everyone feels safe enough to experiment, fail, and learn.
Outside corporate walls:
Exclusive cliques around AI capability are forming that demand deep pockets, pedigree, or connections to enter. Those without the shelter of corporate learning budgets are left drowning in the noise—endless chatter about what direction AI might take, rather than what it can give.
Consumption without access. Anxiety without agency.
And then there's the friction we don't talk about enough:
The mid-career professional who is convinced this is a young person's game. The older worker who feels their window has already closed. The person whose cultural or religious background makes them wary of this technology. The one paralyzed by fear—of job loss, of looking incompetent, of what AI might expose about gaps they've been managing for years.
The industry tells itself it's a skill gap. For many, it's a safety gap.
And for people of color? Failure intolerance is a barrier to entry.
A white colleague "experiments" with a new AI tool and is seen as an innovator. For people of color, that same experimentation is a high-stakes gamble. Men of color face the hyper-competence trap—expected to have the answers, not the questions. A mistake isn't a learning moment; it's used to question their authority. For women of color, the double-bind is even tighter. Don't use AI? You're a laggard. Use it imperfectly? It's your competence in question, not the tool's utility.
Structurally, there is a lower tolerance for the mistakes made by people in these demographics. When you don't feel safe to fail, you don't have the freedom to learn.
These populations don't get talked about because they're harder to reach, because the easier path is to teach those who already have the resources and access.
But that's not access. That's abandonment dressed up as progress.
